Finds the UFC less hospitable than the Contenders Series
October 27, 2019
Mayes lost to Ciryl Gane via submission (heel hook) at 4:46 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Singapore.
Mayes earned this shot in the UFC after two wins on Dana White's Contender Series. This clearly was a step up in competition. Gane was simply too much for Mayes on the feet. He could not change the place of the fight, because Gane was the better wrestler as well. Mayes tried to stay in the best as best he could and fire back on the feet. In the third round, he caught a shot to the body, which ultimately led to a takedown and submission finish for Gane. Mayes will likely receive a softer touch for his second UFC fight.

Booked for UFC debut
August 25, 2019
Mayes will take on Ciryl Gane in a heavyweight bout at UFC Singapore on October 26, Nolan King of reports.
Mayes earned a UFC contract back in July when he defeated Ricardo Prasel via TKO (punches) at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series, so the bout in October will be his official debut under the promotion. He'll certainly have his hands full, with Gane coming off a dominant debut of his own when he won via submission in the first round of his fight against Raphael Pessoa just over two weeks ago.
Latest heavyweight on UFC roster
July 17, 2019
Mayes defeated Ricardo Prasel via TKO (punches) at 4:59 of Round 1 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. He was one of four fighters awarded a UFC contract on the evening.
This was the third Contender Series appearance for Mayes, who was finally able to earn a UFC roster spot. He lost to current UFC heavyweight Allen Crowder in 2017, but bounced back with a second-round victory over Mitchell Sipe last July. That wasn't enough to earn him a contract, but after just under a year on the sidelines, Mayes cashed in a breakthrough performance. His striking ability and takedown defense were both evident in this one, and Mayes also displayed the aggressiveness Dana White is looking for. With 10 seconds left in the first round, Mayes blitzed his opponent and ultimately recorded a buzzer-beating finish. Standing at 6-6 with a 82-inch reach, he possesses a large frame, even for the highest weight class in the promotion. The 27-year-old will add some much-needed depth to the heavyweight division.
