Exploring options as grad transfer
January 28, 2020
Bortenschlager entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal Monday, 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A slew of injuries at quarterback allowed Bortenschlager to make eight starts as a redshirt freshman in 2017, but he didn't do enough to convince Maryland he was much more than a stopgap solution, as he finished that season with a 51.9 percent completion rate for 5.6 yards per attempt and a 10:5 TD:INT. He was limited strictly to a special-teams role to begin 2018 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury, and Bortenschlager didn't play at all in 2019 as a result of a preseason stress fracture in addition to being buried on the depth chart. Now a rising redshirt senior, Bortenschlager may have to move on elsewhere if he hopes to see the field in his final season. He's on track to graduate before the start of the 2020 season, so Bortenschlager would be eligible right away if he moves to another FBS school.
