2020 Tournament PreviewThe Wolverines suffered heavy losses from the 2018-19 team that made the Sweet Sixteen, with both Ignas Brazdeikis and Charles Matthews departing for the pro ranks, in addition to long-tenured head coach John Beilein. Juwan Howard was hired to fill the vacancy left by Beilein, and fortunately for Howard, point guard Zavier Simpson (12.9 ppg, 7.9 apg and 4.4 rpg) returned for his senior year and continues to captain the ship. Fellow upperclassmen Jon Teske (11.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and Isaiah Livers (13.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg) are also back, with Livers now healthy after missing much of conference play due to an ankle injury. Despite hovering around .500 for most of Big Ten play, Michigan boasts resume-boosting non-conference wins against Iowa State, North Carolina and Gonzaga to give them top-5 strength of schedule marks by just about any metric. The Wolverines are also one of few teams to sport top-25 rankings in KenPom's offensive and defensive efficiency marks. They struggle to create turnovers with the nation's 322nd-ranked defensive turnover rate, but have no glaring weaknesses outside of that.
