Seamus Mitchell
Dealing with ankle injury
FHawthorn Hawks
Ankle
March 4, 2021
Mitchell is dealing with an ankle injury and his status is unconfirmed for Round 1 against Essendon, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell doesn't seem like he has a good chance of playing as the season begins and there's little to suggest when he could begin his AFL career as a recent draft pick.
Jack Gunston
Out for first month
FHawthorn Hawks
Back
March 4, 2021
Gunston has already been ruled out of the first month of the regular season with a back injury, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Gunston scored 31 goals in 2020 but only collected 181 disposals, which shows that forwards who end up with the most goals aren't going to provide top-tier fantasy value. At the least, there's no need to worry about what Gunston can do as he may not play until late April at the earliest.
Jack Scrimshaw
Doubt for Round 1
DHawthorn Hawks
Knee
March 4, 2021
Scrimshaw is "unlikely" to play in Round 1 against Essendon due to bone bruising in his knee, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Scrimshaw's value isn't outstanding as he averaged 15.4 disposals and 4 marks per game in 2020. Still, he's a safe bet to play when fully fit and that doesn't look to be likely to begin the season.
Tom Mitchell
May play in Round 1
MHawthorn Hawks
Shoulder
March 4, 2021
Mitchell has a chance to play in Round 1 against Essendon if he can recover from offseason shoulder surgery, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell will miss Friday's practice match against North Melbourne as a certainty but his coach Alastair Clarkson suggested he would play Mitchell if he's available. When looking for a high-value pick, Mitchell is a solid bet when he's healthy after logging the fourth-most marks of any player in the Premiership in 2020.
Chad Wingard
To sit out preseason match
MHawthorn Hawks
General Soreness
March 4, 2021
Wingard is dealing with a "soft-tissue" injury and will miss Friday's preseason match against North Melbourne, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
This injury also puts Wingard's status for Round 1 against Essendon into question as he works his way towards full fitness. If Wingard can kick home a few goals early in the season, his value will be worth monitoring as the rest of his production wasn't as much a guarantee of good fantasy numbers as when he scored nine goals in the first four matches of 2020.
Luke Breust
Gets two-year extension
MHawthorn Hawks
February 11, 2021
Breust signed a two-year contract extension with Hawthorn on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Breust appeared in 13 games with the Hawks in 2020, averaging 1.2 goals, 4.9 handballs and 4.0 tackles per game. The team saw enough of his skills to lock him up for the foreseeable future.
Paul Puopolo
Finishes career in style
FHawthorn Hawks
September 20, 2020
Puopolo scored three goals and collected 11 disposals (six kicks, five handballs) during Sunday's 108-57 win over Gold Coast Suns.
ANALYSIS
Puopolo was rightfully carried off the field by his teammates after a strong attacking show in the final match of the season. After spending most of the season dealing with a calf injury, Puopolo decided to call time on a 195-game career and did so in the best way possible.
Jack Gunston
Scores four in win
FHawthorn Hawks
September 20, 2020
Gunston scored four majors and two behinds to go with 18 disposals made (15 kicks, three handballs) and made 11 marks during Sunday's 108-57 win over Gold Coast Suns.
ANALYSIS
Gunston seemingly saved his best work for last as he set season-highs in majors, disposals and marks in this contest. Depending on how the Hawks re-tool ahead of next season, Gunston could become more than just a reliable scorer and occasionally have star-worthy performances.
Tom Mitchell
Dominates in win
MHawthorn Hawks
September 20, 2020
Mitchell collected 34 disposals (16 kicks, 18 handballs) in addition to making seven marks and completing five clearances during Sunday's 108-57 win over Gold Coast Suns.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was exceptionally dominant from the middle of July to the end of the season and finished it off by tying his season-high totals for disposals in marks in a game. The season is now over for Mitchell and the team may change some around him in order to provide some fresh options for the next campaign.
Tom Scully
Left out of starting lineup
FHawthorn Hawks
Undisclosed
September 19, 2020
Scully was not included in the Hawks' starting lineup ahead of their Round 18 match against the Suns.
ANALYSIS
Scully was forced to miss last Sunday's match against the Bulldogs after being scratched with an illness. The magnitude of the illness wasn't thought to be serious so Scully was expected to be healthy and ready to play for the regular-season finale. It's unclear if he's still not feeling well or if he's dealing with another type of issue that is forcing him to miss consecutive matches.
James Frawley
Returns to starting lineup
DHawthorn Hawks
September 19, 2020
Frawley (back) is in the Hawks' starting unit ahead of their Round 18 clash with the Suns.
ANALYSIS
Frawley was unavailable last weekend due to back soreness but was only held out for one match as a result. He'll return Saturday for the season finale while averaging 8.1 disposals and 5.2 kicks per match.
Jonathon Patton
Off injury list
FHawthorn Hawks
September 16, 2020
Patton (calf) has been removed from the Hawks' injury list.
ANALYSIS
Patton last took the field Aug. 27 versus Essendon, when he tore his plantaris tendon. Fortunately, it appears the issue isn't as bad as initially suspected and he should be available for selection should the Hawks need another body.
Benjamin Stratton
Set for final AFL game
DHawthorn Hawks
September 16, 2020
Stratton (ankle) will play Sunday in his final AFL contest before retiring.
ANALYSIS
Stratton will give it one last go under his captaincy before the defender heads into retirement. While he's not a fantasy stalwart, his availability should provide an emotional boost and extra motivation for the Hawks to send him out on a positive note versus Gold Coast.
Tom Scully
Doesn't play Sunday
FHawthorn Hawks
Illness
September 13, 2020
Scully was a late scratch Sunday against the Bulldogs due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Scully was feeling under the weather Sunday, so he was unable to play against the Bulldogs. The illness wasn't very serious, so Scully could certainly be ready to play in Sunday's season finale against Gold Coast.
James Frawley
Misses Sunday's game
DHawthorn Hawks
Back
September 13, 2020
Frawley didn't play Sunday due to back soreness.
ANALYSIS
Frawley missed time at the end of August due to a dislocated thumb, and he was a late out Sunday with a back issue. It's unclear whether he'll be ready for Sunday's season finale against Gold Coast.
Paul Puopolo
Slated to retire
FHawthorn Hawks
September 13, 2020
Puopolo announced his intent to retire at the end of the 2020 season, 7 AFL reports.
ANALYSIS
Puopolo will play his final game Sunday following a 10-year career, as he'll retire along with teammate Benjamin Stratton. Puopolo appeared in 195 games for the Hawks during his career.
Benjamin Stratton
Intends to retire
DHawthorn Hawks
Ankle
September 13, 2020
Stratton (ankle) will retire following the 2020 season, 7 AFL reports.
ANALYSIS
Stratton has missed time with an ankle injury recently, but he recorded 108 disposals and 61 kicks over 13 games earlier in the season. The 31-year-old has played for the Hawks since 2009 but will finish his career at the conclusion of this season.
Damon Greaves
Serviceable production in game number 2
DHawthorn Hawks
September 13, 2020
Greaves had 14 disposals (10 kicks, four handballs), six marks and three tackles in Sunday's 76-40 loss to the Western Bulldogs.
ANALYSIS
Playing in just his second game of AFL football, Greaves showed why the Hawks took him with the 14th selection in the 2018 Rookie draft. He has demonstrated his ability to stay strong under the high ball and is able to link successfully with his teammates out of the backline. With only one game of the season remaining and basically nothing to play for, Greaves seems likely to see plenty of action next Sunday against the Suns.
Finn Maginness
Solid performance in debut
MHawthorn Hawks
September 13, 2020
Maginness totaled 10 disposals (two kicks, eight handballs) and five tackles in Sunday's 76-40 loss to the Bulldogs.
ANALYSIS
Maginness made his debut for the Hawks after being selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2019 draft. The young midfielder had an immediate impact, racking up an impressive five tackles during his time on the field. The Hawks sit 16th on the ladder and will finish the season with a matchup against the Suns next Sunday in Adelaide.
Daniel Howe
Interchange player Sunday
MHawthorn Hawks
September 12, 2020
Howe is listed as an interchange player for Sunday's match against the Bulldogs.
ANALYSIS
Howe had nine disposals (three kicks and six handballs), three marks and one clearance last week against St. Kilda and will work as a reserve player for Sunday's Round 17 matchup.
Tim O'Brien
Starting Sunday
FHawthorn Hawks
September 12, 2020
O'Brien (ankle) is in the team's starting lineup ahead of their match against the Bulldogs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
O'Brien was forced to exit early in the team's last match against Melbourne after rolling his ankle but appears to have healed quickly as he won't be forced to miss any time.
Jaeger O'Meara
Returning Sunday
FHawthorn Hawks
September 12, 2020
O'Meara (hand) is included in the starting lineup for Sunday's match against the Saints.
ANALYSIS
O'Meara is returning to action Sunday after missing the last four matches with a broken hand he suffered against the Eagles in Round 12. O'Meara is one of the team leaders in disposals as he averages nearly 19 a game and should provide a nice boost on offense for the two remaining regular-season contests.
James Worpel
Remains out
MHawthorn Hawks
Shoulder
September 12, 2020
Worpel (shoulder) is unavailable Sunday against the Bulldogs.
ANALYSIS
Worpel was forced to leave in the third quarter of the Round 16 loss to the Saints after injuring his shoulder in a collision for the football. Worpel was seen wrapped up in a sling following the game and may not return this season with just one more round remaining on the schedule.
Luke Breust
Scores two goals in loss
MHawthorn Hawks
September 6, 2020
Breust scored two majors and logged two behinds while also making four tackles during Saturday's 80-66 loss to Saint Kilda.
ANALYSIS
Breust did help with a late score during the comeback attempt, but otherwise wasn't clinical enough to make the difference. It doesn't seem likely his production will go any higher than this over the final two matches of the season.
Tom Mitchell
Makes 27 disposals in loss
MHawthorn Hawks
September 6, 2020
Mitchell logged 27 disposals (14 kicks, 13 handballs) and made five marks during Saturday's 80-66 loss to Saint Kilda.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been rather valuable through his possession despite the struggles of the Hawks to get results. He's logged at least 23 disposals in seven straight Rounds and kept similarly strong numbers in tackling. Of anyone on his team, Mitchell has a good shot to maintain his production during the final matches of the season.
