Andrew McGrath
Interchange for Community Series
MEssendon Bombers
March 5, 2021
McGrath (concussion) is listed among the interchanges for Saturday's Community Series tilt versus Geelong.
ANALYSIS
McGrath had recently been sidelined by a concussion but appears to be healthy enough to give in a go Saturday. This should put his status in pretty good shape for the team's season opener in a couple of weeks.
Jed Anderson
Not in Community Series lineup
MNorth Melbourne Kangaroos
Calf
March 5, 2021
Anderson (calf) has not been included in the Roos' lineup for Saturday's Community Series contest versus Hawthorn.
ANALYSIS
Anderson should be ready for the start of the regular season but will apparently require the extra downtime to get right ahead of it. As a result, he will sit out the clash Saturday, leaving a younger North Melbourne squad to take on the Hawks.
Ben Cunnington
Suffers setback in recovery
MNorth Melbourne Kangaroos
Concussion
March 4, 2021
Cunnington has suffered a setback in his recovery from a concussion and will not play in the weekend's Community Series game versus Hawthorn, Fox Footy reports.
ANALYSIS
Cunnington was originally expected to make his return this weekend but will have to push that back until at least Round 1. When healthy, he figures to be a key piece in the Roos midfield again in 2021.
Jack Viney
Highly questionable for opener
MMelbourne Demons
Foot
March 4, 2021
Viney is pressing for time to be ready for the opener versus Fremantle folowing foot surgery, the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Viney was a core member of the Demons' midfield during the 2020 campaign, averaging 18.5 disposals -- 9.6 kick and 8.9 handballs -- 2.3 marks and 4.1 tackles over 16 games. He figures to handle a sizable role again once healthy but may not be ready to start the season with his teammates.
Rory Atkins
Slated to miss start of season
MGold Coast Suns
Foot
March 4, 2021
Atkins is in line to miss the opening of the season due to a foot issue, the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Atkins has reportedly rejoined the main group but won't be quite up to speed for the start of the season. Look for more information to surface when he's cleared for his first AFL action of the 2021 home and away season.
Sam Powell-Pepper
Unlikely for Round 1
MPort Adelaide Power
Hand
March 4, 2021
Powell-Pepper is considered "unlikely" for the Round 1 match against North Melbourne due surgery on a broken bone in his hand, according to Nathan Schmook of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Powell-Pepper scored six majors and logged 77 tackles last season, which aren't bad numbers but seldom yield high-end value. There should be more news on when he could return when Round 1 nears, though for now he'll miss the Community Series match against Adelaide on Saturday.
Sam Simpson
Recovering from shoulder surgery
MGeelong Cats
Shoulder
March 4, 2021
Simpson is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and his status for the beginning of the regular season isn't fully clear, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Simpson only played from July 9 to the end of the season in 2020 and his most notable performance came in his debut with 27 clearances against Brisbane. When he gets healthy, he'll be worth more attention if he can recapture his best work than what he did for much of the season.
Luke Dahlhaus
Likely out Saturday
MGeelong Cats
Groin
March 4, 2021
Dahlhaus is expected to miss Saturday's Community Series match against Essendon due to a groin injury, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Dahlhaus wasn't overly impressive in 2020 but he still averaged 13.5 disposals per game and someone else will need to pick up the slack if he can't play. Fortunately, it looks like Dahlhaus will be ready to play in Round 1against Adelaide unless something sets him back in his recovery.
Mitchell Duncan
Expected out for Community Series
MGeelong Cats
Calf
March 4, 2021
Duncan is expected to miss Saturday's Community Series match against Essendon and may not be ready for Round 1 against Adelaide due to setbacks in a calf injury, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Duncan is worth monitoring as his health improves after logging the 10th most marks in 2020 and ranking high in fantasy production across the entire league even in a deep midfield. However, if this injury continues to linger Duncan may not be at full speed when he does get the chance to play.
Kane Lambert
In lineup Friday
MRichmond Tigers
March 4, 2021
Lambert (hip) is in the lineup for Friday's Community Series contest versus Collingwood.
ANALYSIS
Lambert was recovering from offseason hip surgery but appears to be in good shape well ahead of the regular season. He figures to be a solid piece in the Tigers' midfield again this season after averaging 15.6 disposals, 3.4 tackles and 3.1 marks per game in 2020.
David MacKay
Dealing with concussion symptoms
MAdelaide Crows
Concussion
March 4, 2021
MacKay continues to be sidelined by concussion symptoms, the AFL's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
MacKay still has some time to get right ahead of the regular season, but it's quite likely he will be held out of the Community Series match this weekend. MacKay should be a mainstay in the lineup for the Crows again in 2021 after averaging 15.5 disposals, 2.5 marks and 1.6 tackles a season ago.
Tom Mitchell
May play in Round 1
MHawthorn Hawks
Shoulder
March 4, 2021
Mitchell has a chance to play in Round 1 against Essendon if he can recover from offseason shoulder surgery, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell will miss Friday's practice match against North Melbourne as a certainty but his coach Alastair Clarkson suggested he would play Mitchell if he's available. When looking for a high-value pick, Mitchell is a solid bet when he's healthy after logging the fourth-most marks of any player in the Premiership in 2020.
Chad Wingard
To sit out preseason match
MHawthorn Hawks
General Soreness
March 4, 2021
Wingard is dealing with a "soft-tissue" injury and will miss Friday's preseason match against North Melbourne, according to Mitch Cleary of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
This injury also puts Wingard's status for Round 1 against Essendon into question as he works his way towards full fitness. If Wingard can kick home a few goals early in the season, his value will be worth monitoring as the rest of his production wasn't as much a guarantee of good fantasy numbers as when he scored nine goals in the first four matches of 2020.
Daniel Venables
Out indefinitely
MWest Coast Eagles
Concussion
March 4, 2021
Venables remains out indefinitely due to problems stemming from a concussion suffered last season, according to Nathan Schmook of the AFL's official website.
ANALYSIS
Venables is still being kept on the roster for the Eagles even though they could draft someone who's healthy, which is a good sign that he'll have a place to play if and when he returns. For now, Venables is unlikely to be seen for the first few Rounds.
Ben Cunnington
Should be back
MNorth Melbourne Kangaroos
Concussion
March 4, 2021
Cunnington should return in Friday's practice match against Hawthorn after completing concussion protocol, according to Riley Beveridge of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Cunnington missed the first practice match last week against St. Kilda but has since had no other issues in training. He only played three times in 2020 and will hope to be available more consistently in 2021.
Mark Hutchings
Still dealing with thigh injury
MWest Coast Eagles
Thigh
March 4, 2021
Hutchings is still in the middle of recovering from an iliotibial band injury in his thigh, according to GM Craig Vozzo. His status has yet to be confirmed for the Round 1 matchup with Gold Coast.
ANALYSIS
Hutchings only played three times in 2020 and has a long way to go before he can touch the field in 2021. He'll need more time to get a proper read on his fantasy value in the new campaign.
Elliot Yeo
Still recovering from groin issue
MWest Coast Eagles
Groin
March 4, 2021
Yeo is still in the process of recovering from a groin injury and his status for Round 1 against Gold Coast has yet to be confirmed, according to GM Craig Vozzo.
ANALYSIS
Yeo hasn't played since Aug. 9 of 2020 and it's not certain he'll be ready for Round 1 in 2021. When healthy, Yeo will be a reliable fantasy option as he recorded at least 20 disposals in all but three appearances and never made fewer than three tackles in any match last season.
Tim Kelly
Should play in round one
MWest Coast Eagles
Thumb
March 4, 2021
Kelly will be held out of Sunday's practice match as he lets a fractured thumb completely heal but should have no problems playing in round one against Gold Coast, according to GM Craig Vozzo.
ANALYSIS
Kelly wasn't always a top fantasy option last season but he should begin the season in good shape when this injury is behind him. In 2020, Kelly would often get involved with a mid-high number of disposals plus a few marks and tackles and those are good ways to stay relevant in fantasy almost every week.
Sam Sturt
Likely out for Round 1
MFremantle Dockers
Ankle
March 3, 2021
Sturt (ankle) isn't expected to be available for the Dockers' Round 1 clash versus Melbourne, Braden Quartermaine of The West Australian reports.
ANALYSIS
Stur's ankle injury drags on from last season and leaves him frustrated as the 2021 campaign approaches. It remains to be seen exactly when he will be cleared for game action, but it doesn't sound as though he will necessarily be sidelined too long.
Trent Dumont
Doubt for preseason match
MNorth Melbourne Kangaroos
Calf
March 3, 2021
Dumont is "touch-and-go" for Friday's preseason match against Hawthorn due to a calf injury, according to Riley Beveridge of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Dumont is one of a few of the 'Roos reliable midfielders last season who may not play Friday. Even if he misses this match, there's little to suggest that he won't be ready for the regular season.
Jed Anderson
Questionable for preseason match
MNorth Melbourne Kangaroos
Calf
March 3, 2021
Anderson is questionable for Friday's preseason match against Hawthorn due to a calf injury, according to Riley Beveridge of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Anderson is still likely to be ready when the regular season begins, but for now his status is still unclear for this preseason match. He was one of the 'Roos best last season with 28-or-more disposals on four different occasions and will hope to continue his fine efforts in 2021.
Aiden Bonar
Will miss beginning of season
MNorth Melbourne Kangaroos
Shoulder
March 3, 2021
Bonar is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season due to a calf injury, according to Riley Beveridge of AFL.com.
ANALYSIS
Bonar ended last season with a shoulder injury and begins the new one with a calf issue. He never recorded more than 12 disposals in six appearances last season.
Kane Lambert
Recovering from hip surgery
MRichmond Tigers
Hip
March 3, 2021
Lambert is still in the recovery process from offseason hip surgery and his status hasn't been confirmed for Friday's preseason match against Collingwood or for the beginning of the regular season, according to Callum Twomey of the AFL's official website.
ANALYSIS
Lambert has a better shot of playing in the season opener Mar. 18 but there's more to figure out before he's given the all-clear. He only topped 20 disposals in three of his 20 appearances last season.
Dion Prestia
Not fully fit
MRichmond Tigers
Hamstring
March 3, 2021
Prestia is in the midst of recovering from a hamstring injury and his status isn't guaranteed for the season opener against Carlton on Mar. 18, according to Callum Twomey of the AFL's official website.
ANALYSIS
Prestia has little to no chance of appearing in Friday's preseason match against Collingwood and still needs more time to get into shape before the season begins. He was out between July and October with an ankle injury last season and injuries are worth monitoring for Prestia even after he helped the Tigers to a Premiership title in 2020.
Taylor Adams
Returning from hamstring injury
MCollingwood Magpies
Hamstring
March 3, 2021
Adams is a doubt to face Richmond in Friday's preseason match against Richmond, according to Mitch Cleary of the AFL's official website.
ANALYSIS
Adams is expected to return when the regular season gets underway but for now isn't at full fitness. He was one of the better fantasy options throughout 2020 and figures to continue as a top option unless he proves otherwise.
